The Invention of Family Dinners
Spotlighted Demo
Halloween is done...
The Family Dinner Season is Upon Us...
So we are sharing the finale of our musical 'The Caveman' as the spotlighted demo! This song is sung by Nathan Fosbinder (Turk'ak), Sojourner Brown (Fizg), Brian Michael Hoffman (Grug), and Dana Aber (The Birds)!
The closing number of "The Caveman" brings out what the show is ultimately about: That through all the struggle and hardship, the good times and bad, family and love is what ultimately survives.
The Invention of Love and The Invention fo Family ultimately leads to the Invention of the Family Dinners... and thus the Holiday Season Family Dinners... that's just how it works... you're welcome...
Few Fun Facts
The original draft of this song was just a duet (shocking) and not the final number (SHOCKINGx2)!
The original finale had everyone but one character die...
which was not what we really wanted...
and was just sad...
wow...
this is sad now...
ANYWAY, the original version of this song was called "Made it All Up" and it was very, very different. As an assignment for a lyric writing class at the NYU Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program we were asked to write a 'kernel song'. I was going to bring in "Made it All Up". 10 Minutes before the start of the class Theo and I scrambled to rewrite the song as inspiration had struck!

The new, scrambled lyric was more in line with what we wanted. When we went to Goodspeed Opera House as a part of the program we completed the next draft. Then the next draft. Then the next draft. Ultimately we ended up with the finale of the show!
Also, HUGE shoutout to Dana Aber who made The Birds more distinct and amazing with her character whistling! We love that as being apart of the the button on the end of the show!
Song's Context in the Show
Everything leads to this song. "The Invention of Love" is the invention of family. Through all the turmoil it is family that is created and family that survives. This is the end of the show where we leave this heartfelt musical on a high note!
And not a sad note...
... where Grug the Social Anxiety Ridden Mammoth dies...
........ just thinking that I did that originally makes me sad...
.....
.............
Now. Hear. This.
The song is here. Experience the LOVE! LOVE!!!!!!!!
